Reading Room
The Ledger

A place for the details.

A simple starting point for keeping household information findable.

A household reference does not need to contain everything. Start with the details you have already had to look for twice.

Begin with an index

Make one short page that tells you where things are kept. It can point to a folder, a drawer, or another document. The index is useful even before the rest is tidy.

Keep three small lists

  • People: the contacts you return to, with a note about what each person helps with.
  • Things: appliances or equipment, with the model number and where to find the manual.
  • Rhythms: recurring household tasks, with a date to check them again.

Make it easy to return

Use names that make sense at a glance. “Dishwasher manual” is easier to recognize than an unexplained file number.

Add a note when something changes. A useful reference can be modest and unfinished; it only needs to make the next search a little easier.
